Giacomo Zoni - Bologna, 1780
Since the fifteenth century in Bologna, the Tarot's Trionfi (today the Major Arcana) were considered a manual for cosmology and as a summary of moral precepts and theological considerations. The Tarot then became a game of chance and skill used by the Estensi courts and was later transformed into a tool for divining. Notwithstanding these changes in use however, the ancient depictions of the Tarot of Bologna have been maintained almost intact.

When the Italian and French Tarot traditions met, certain decks were created with very unique and remarkable images. The ancient tradition of the Tarot of Lombardy was renewed at the beginning of the nineteenth century by a great German born printer, Ferdinando Gumppenberg. This neoclassical deck was the first of a long series of authentic works of art used as a game and for cartomancy.
